Jim McDermott

Jim McDermott was a Republican. He left the party over the Patriot Act and the National Defense Authorization Act. He calls those bills patriotic-sounding names with anti-American content. The right to due process is not partisan. He joined the Libertarian Party because it was the only party that held that line without apology. He has not left.

He has run for Alaska’s U.S. House seat three times as a Libertarian. His vote share grew every single race — 5.2% in 2012, 7.6% in 2014, 10.4% in 2016. LP National called his 2016 result one of the strongest performances by a Libertarian federal candidate running against a full major-party field. He is running again in 2026 because Washington has not gotten better. It has gotten worse.

The man holding Alaska’s House seat voted for the One Big Beautiful Budget Act — a bill the Congressional Budget Office scored at $3.4 trillion added to the national debt. He voted to keep tariffs on Canada, a direct tax increase on Alaska consumers and businesses. Jim would have voted no on both. Zero is what he has promised to add to the debt through his tenure. He supports term limits and practices what he preaches: he would not seek a third term.

He has lived in Alaska for 35 years. He retired from the Air Force as a Master Sergeant after 22.5 years. He has taught business at UAF for more than eight years and run small business development programs in Fairbanks.
